January is Glaucoma Awareness Month
Our Optometrists at Berk Eye Care Center Provides Information on Glaucoma for the Columbus & Gahanna Communities
At Berk Eye Care Center, our optometrists take great pride in serving the Columbus and Gahanna areas with the highest standard of optometry care available. We consider it our responsibility to keep our patients informed on matters related to their eye and vision health, which is why we want to spend some time discussing a common eye condition known as glaucoma. With January being Glaucoma Awareness Month, now is a good time to review some of the common symptoms, as well as the diagnosis and treatment options for glaucoma.
Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma
One of the most startling facts about glaucoma is that it doesn't always have obvious symptoms. Because glaucoma refers to a condition where excess pressure builds up in the eye and presses on the optic nerve, symptoms may not become obvious to patients until it's too late. By this point, permanent vision loss will have occurred. However, for those who do experience earlier symptoms, these typically include:
- blurry vision
- seeing halos around lights
- strange spots in vision
Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma By Our Eye Doctors
The best way to diagnose glaucoma conclusively is to have our Gahanna and Columbus eye doctors perform a test that measures the amount of pressure within your eye. In order to do this, your eyes will need to be numbed using specialized eye drops. However, the test itself is painless. If high pressure readings are found in one or both of your eyes, our optometrists will diagnose you and begin discussing potential treatment options.
The good news is that there are treatments available for glaucoma, though it is important to note that once your vision has been damaged by this disease, it typically cannot be restored. Still, treatment can help to protect you from further vision loss.
The specific treatment used will vary based on the severity of your diagnosis. For some, a medication and beta blocker may be enough to manage the disease. In more serious situations, surgical treatment may be required to relieve the pressure and prevent future vision loss.
